natural deodorant masterclass

The case for switching over to natural deodorants these days couldn’t be stronger. However, finding the right option can feel overwhelming, intimidating and downright hopeless. And let’s be honest, none of us want to smell like we’ve rolled around in our own sweat all day and neglected to take a shower, am I right?! Well fear not, fellow green beauty lover. I put together a list of some of the best performing, most popular natural deodorants we carry to make your life easy breezy (and oh-so-fresh).

There’s a much greater awareness now surrounding the chemicals found in traditional deodorants and antiperspirants. Deodorants and antiperspirants found in your local pharmacy may contain ingredients such as parabens, aluminum, triclosan, phthalates and synthetic fragrances. These chemicals may be linked to skin irritation, hormone disruption, cancer and even altering your body’s microbiome. They’re a chemical cocktail disaster! Keep in mind, we’re also placing these toxins in our underarms, a place that is filled with glands and very close to our breast tissue.

Application, texture, scent and ingredients all play a factor in choosing the right natural deodorant for you. Do you like a stick or pot application? Prefer being hands-free? What natural scent are you most drawn to? Below, I break down some of our best-sellers to help you choose what’s right for you.

*Keep in mind, these are all deodorants, not antiperspirants. This means they will help to neutralize odors but will not make you sweat less.

Soapwalla is the original, best-selling deodorant at The Detox Market. I’ve seen many people come back after buying it once to buy a bulk supply because they loved it so much! One for them, their sister, their boyfriend and of course, their mom.

Application: It comes in a little pot and has a creamy, frosting-like consistency. You have to use your fingers to apply. It’s really quite simple, just take a pea-sized amount and apply to each underarm after the shower. Let it melt into your skin and then massage it into one even, thin layer.

Scent: Soapwalla currently offers two different scents; Original, containing peppermint, lavender and tea tree essential oils and Citrus which features bergamot, lemongrass, lime and grapefruit. Both are unisex.

Ingredients: You can find super-fine vegetable powders and clays combined with essential oils doing the active work. Another active ingredient used in Soapwalla deodorants is baking soda.

Agent Nateur

The deodorants from Agent Nateur are hot, hot, hot and provide an easy-to-apply natural option for those who prefer not to use their hands.

Application: The formulas from Agent Nateur have a paste-like consistency and go on easily for those who are stick-inclined. You would use this the way you’d use any stick deodorant. One to two swipes and you’re good to go.

Scent: There are three options to choose from and each one smells delightful. No .3, holi(stick) is unisex and contains lavender and eucalyptus essential oils. No .4, holi(rose) contains rose and sandalwood essential oils creating a beautiful floral, woodsy scent perfect for all you rose lovers out there. No .5, holi(man) contains vetiver, cedarwood, sandalwood, cistus and rose giving it a warm, leathery, calming scent. This one is for men however, in my opinion it could most definitely be unisex as well.

Ingredients: Active ingredients include baking soda, organic coconut oil, beeswax, raw honey and plant-based butters.

Meow Meow Tweet

Meow Meow Tweet deodorants are the newest addition to our selection at The Detox Market. What’s nice about them is that they provide options for everyone. You can choose how you’d like to apply it, and you can choose between baking soda or baking soda-free. It’s up to you!

Application: Meow Meow Tweet offers both stick and pot options which means you can take your pick on how you prefer to apply. If you prefer not using your hands then there are three stick options to choose from, each coming in a biodegradable, push-up paper tube: Eucalyptus lemon, Grapefruit and Lavender. For the pot options, choose between Grapefruit and Lavender. Just like Soapwalla, if choosing the pot application, simply use your fingers and place a pea-size amount under each arm. Let it melt into your skin and then massage into one, even layer.

Scent: There are a variety of scents to choose from. For options that include baking soda, choose between Eucalyptus Lemon – fresh, clean with a spicy hint of clove or Lavender Bergamot – subtle and floral (both are sticks). For baking soda-free options, choose from Grapefruit – with hints of peppermint, lemongrass, bergamot and lavender or Lavender – with hints of lavender and tea tree.

Ingredients: Plant-based oils, butters and powders such as sunflower seed oil, arrowroot powder, cocoa and shea butters and essential oils. Available with or without baking soda.
