february gemstone of the month: amethyst

 Slow the sun with gentle mist;
Enchant the land with amethyst…

-Robert Frost

The most popular lore about amethyst is its supposed power to stave off drunkenness. The Ancient Romans (known for their overindulgence in pretty much everything) drank wine from amethyst cups, believing it helped them drink all night without getting over-intoxicated. While it probably didn’t prevent the physical effects of alcohol, I’m sure it made their buzz less raucous and more chill—after all, amethyst is known as nature’s tranquilizer.

It’s also known as the “all healer”, because it’s beneficial for so many different ailments. It’s said to ease headaches, help balance the endocrine system, regulate hormone production, reduce swelling in any part of the body, boost the immune system, relieve symptoms of tinnitus and support oxygenation of the blood. If I were to recommend only one stone to support all-around good physical health, it would be amethyst.

Energy wise, it’s a very high vibration stone and is best used on the Third Eye and Crown chakras. It helps relax and still the mind, creating a receptive state to receive divine insights and guidance. Amethyst clusters will work wonderfully on a meditation altar to radiate tranquility and provide a focus object for gazing.  Use an amethyst point to draw in energy and guidance by laying down flat on your back and placing at the top of your head with the tip pointing toward you. To relieve the mind and body of negative energy or physical pain, point the tip of the crystal away from you.

Amethyst is the birthstone of February, the month that holds Valentine’s Day. So it’s no surprise that it’s a gemstone that enhances faithfulness and fidelity between lovers. Through the ages it’s been a popular choice for engagement rings and lover’s lockets, but as we all know, the most important love relationship you’ll ever have is the one you have with yourself, so if Valentine’s Day finds you on your own this year, buy yourself a little amethyst something and love yourself just the way you are.
